For a long time, one of the biggest knocks against buying an electric vehicle that wasn’t a Tesla was charging infrastructure. Tesla owners had their Supercharger network—fast, reliable, and seemingly everywhere—while everyone else pieced together road trips using a patchwork of third-party stations that varied wildly in reliability.

  • All current GMC EVs can access Tesla’s Supercharger network using a GM-approved NACS adapter that costs $225.
  • DC fast charging can add around 100 miles of range in about 10 minutes, with costs typically ranging from 40 to 70 cents per kilowatt-hour.
  • Starting in 2025, new GMC electric vehicles will come with built-in NACS ports, eliminating the need for an adapter.

Why This Matters for GMC EV Owners

GM adopted the North American Charging Standard, which is the same connector Tesla uses. That decision opened up the largest and most reliable fast-charging network in North America to every GMC EV owner. Whether you’re driving a Sierra EV or a HUMMER EV, you now have access to thousands of charging stations that were previously off-limits.

Before this change, electric vehicle owners who didn’t drive Teslas had to rely on a mix of third-party charging networks. Some worked great. Others were slow, broken, or just plain hard to find. Tesla’s network isn’t perfect, but it’s consistent, and that consistency makes a huge difference when you’re planning a long drive.

What You Need to Get Started

Current GMC electric vehicles use a CCS charging port, which means you’ll need an adapter to plug into Tesla Superchargers. The GM-approved NACS DC adapter costs $225 and can be ordered through the myGMC app, the GMC Accessories website, or directly from us at the dealership.

Once you have the adapter, you’ll need to set up Tesla Supercharger access in the myGMC app. Open the app, go to Settings, then Public Charging. You’ll activate access and add a credit card for payment. No monthly fees, no subscriptions. You pay for what you use, and that’s it.

When you arrive at a Supercharger, plug the adapter into the Tesla cable, connect it to your vehicle, and start the charging session through the app. The app also shows you where nearby Superchargers are located and whether charging stalls are available, which is helpful when you’re on a road trip and don’t want to waste time hunting for an open spot.

Charging Speed and Costs

Most GMC EVs can handle DC fast charging speeds up to 150 kW. Under good conditions, that translates to about 100 miles of added range in roughly 10 minutes. Newer Supercharger stations don’t split power between neighboring stalls, so you’ll get full charging speed even when the station is busy.

Charging costs vary depending on where you are. Expect to pay somewhere between 40 and 70 cents per kilowatt-hour. You’ll get an email receipt after each session, so you can track your spending.

With access to Tesla’s network, GMC EV owners now have more than 231,000 public Level 2 and DC fast chargers available across North America. And starting next year, new GMC electric vehicles will roll out with NACS ports built in, so future buyers won’t need to mess with adapters at all.

How GM Gives Back

Sep 16, 2022
GMC Gives Back

A Company Committed to Creating Solutions in Local Communities

General Motors puts people at the center of its philanthropy by providing funding, working with nonprofits, and bringing cultural and learning opportunities to kids who might otherwise not have access to them. GM focuses its giving in four specific areas. Want to find out more about how GM gives back? Contact Greg Lair Buick GMC.

STEM Education

STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math is an important area of study, but it’s not always available to all students. GM wants to change this, so they are working to provide STEM opportunities to students from all different backgrounds. They are making immersive learning more available, working to develop computational thinking opportunities, and helping kids explore artificial intelligence. GM is also helping provide access to online and digital tools that kids can use in and out of the classroom.

Climate Equity

Climate change is a big problem, but it affects different communities in different ways. GM gives back to local communities by helping to fund organizations that work at the community level in four different areas. These focus on the future of work, climate equity, electric vehicle infrastructure, and EV access.

People can count on GM to help provide access to climate and energy jobs such as solar panel installation and EV service technicians. They are also working to provide access to sustainable transportation, such as electric vehicles, and work with underserved communities that are feeling the effects of climate change, whether it’s flooding, droughts, or urban heat.

Community Development

GM gives back to the community by working with nonprofits to help people increase their marketable vocational and technical skills to get better jobs. By donating and working with the nonprofits, GM helps give free rides to alleviate transportation problems for people who need to get to work or get to an interview, provides women of color with entrepreneurship education, supports small businesses in Flint, MI, and Buffalo, NY.

GM calls Detroit home and has strong ties to the city. Because of this, it focuses many of its resources on Detroit and its neighbors by investing $50 million into Detroit-based organizations.

Vehicle And Road Safety

Vehicle and road safety is another area of extreme importance to GM. This is why they are working to develop and expand programs to help reduce crashes and promote awareness. Programs such as Safe Kids Worldwide, National Organizations for Youth Safety, and the National Safety Council reach millions of individuals. GM gives back by donating to programs that go into high schools to provide road safety programs and getting individuals to commit to the Safe Driving Pledge.

GM Gives Back In Many Ways

If you want to learn more about how GM gives back and how the company supports local communities, you can stop by Greg Lair Buick GMC. One of our staff will be happy to talk to you more about it.

Sometimes when the universe gives you pain, you can turn it into purpose. At least, that’s what the John Michael Morrison 5k Charity Run is all about. Each year, runners, walkers, and joggers come together to participate in a 5k meant to honor a fallen member of the running community.

John Michael Morrison started running in 7th grade at Westover Middle School in the Amarillo, Texas, area. Beyond being naturally gifted, Morrison had a passion for running that other kids his age had for video games, movies, and professional sports. By the time Morrison reached his sophomore year, he had 23 medals from his freshman year on. He was involved in the mile and two-mile races as well as cross country.

Tragedy Strikes The Community
Sadly, tragedy struck in 2019 when John Michael Morrison lost his life in a car accident that happened as he was leaving practice. That was a moment that struck the running community as well as the general area.

Honoring John Michael Morrison
His parents decided to launch the John Michael Morrison Memorial Scholarship, which honors Morrison’s love and passion for running. The community comes out yearly to support the memorial and honor Morrison’s memory. It’s both a somber and proud moment for his parents, as they were able to turn something horrible into something honorable.

Community Support
One of the best parts about the event is seeing the community rally behind the race. Not only do runners come from all over the surrounding areas, but local businesses chip in to offer support. Companies like Greg Lair GMC wholeheartedly believe in the purpose of both the fundraiser and the memorial. In fact, Greg Lair GMC was again the top sponsor for the 5k charity run this year.

A Community Rallies Together
Morrison’s parents are touched by the outpouring of support and love from the community, runners, and local businesses. “You never know how much the impact he had on so many lives,” his mother remarked, “that’s what we see every day, something happens every day, and we’re just able to see that, feel it, and know that he was able to make a difference.”

Turning Tragedy Into Something Good
When discussing the purpose behind the John Michael Morrison 5k Charity Run, Morrison’s mom believes in turning tragedy into something good for the community: “God’s just good like that, he’ll make something good from tragedy. That’s what allows us to just keep going every day. Put one foot in front of the other and just help other people.”
