Park a loaded full-size GMC SUV next to its mid-level sibling, and most people can’t tell them apart from twenty feet away. Get closer. Sit inside, drive one for an hour, and the gap starts to make sense. The question is whether that gap lines up with the money.
- Hands-free driving, four-corner air suspension, and 24-inch wheels come standard on the top trim instead of sitting on the options list.
- Front seats move 16 ways with a massage function, and the middle row can be swapped for heated and ventilated captain’s chairs.
- Night Vision and second-row executive seating never show up on a Denali, no matter how many boxes you check.
How GMC Builds the Yukon Ladder
Five trims make up the lineup. Elevation sits at the bottom, and AT4 handles the off-road side. Denali covers the luxury middle, and the two Ultimate versions cap off each path. Engine choices split the group in half. Elevation and AT4 use the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8. Output there lands at 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Denali and both Ultimate trims move up to the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8, producing 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. A Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel inline-six can be ordered on any of the five.
So the engine isn’t what you’re paying for at the top. Denali and Denali Ultimate share the same 6.2L V8 and the same 10-speed automatic. Drive is the first real split. Denali starts as a rear-wheel-drive SUV with 4WD on the options list. The Ultimate version comes with four-wheel drive built in.
Suspension and Wheels Do the Heavy Lifting
Denali already rides on Magnetic Ride Control. That system reads the pavement and adjusts damping as you drive. Step up, and you keep it, then add four-corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. Air ride adjusts the truck’s height based on how you’re driving. On the beat-up county roads west of Amarillo, that pairing smooths out ruts a steel-spring SUV would slam through.
Twenty-four-inch machined wheels in After Midnight Metallic come standard here. Denali buyers can order 22-inch or 24-inch wheels, so that look is reachable either way. Exterior trim is a different story. Vader Chrome accents replace the bright chrome. The fixed assist steps become power-retractable, lit around the edges so they glow when you walk up at night.
The Seats Are Where the Money Shows
This is the part you feel every single day. Front seats gain 16-way power adjustment with a massage feature, wrapped in Woodland Mahogany full-grain leather. Order the second-row executive seating, and the middle row turns into heated and ventilated captain’s chairs. Those get their own massage function plus Bose speakers built into the head restraints.
One tradeoff worth knowing about. Denali seats up to eight people. GMC lists the Yukon Denali Ultimate at seven, since those captain’s chairs replace a bench seat. Families who haul a full crew should do that math first.
Technology That Stays Up Top
Super Cruise hands-free driving comes standard with a three-year OnStar One plan. Lower trims can add it as an option. Up here, it’s just part of the truck. Night Vision is offered only on the two Ultimate trims. It displays a thermal image and flags people or large animals in the road ahead. Same story with the Bose Performance Series audio. It starts at 18 speakers and climbs to 22 once the head-restraint speakers are in play.
A dual-pane sunroof is standard here, too. Add the rear-seat media system with its two 12.6-inch touchscreens and HDMI ports, and the tech gap gets wide fast.

Who Should Stretch for the Top Rung
Long-haul highway drivers get the most out of this trim. Super Cruise makes a four-hour run down I-27 far less tiring. Air suspension and massaging seats keep your back happy for the rest of it. If your Yukon mostly runs school pickup and grocery duty, a loaded Denali covers nearly all of it for less money. Prices shift from one model year to the next, so pull up a current build sheet before you draw that line.
